Most Common Issues
Sonos pauses when I put in my AirPods or receive a phone call
When your audio output changes, macOS signals all audio-aware apps to pause, and Menu Bar Controller respects that.
To disable this behavior, go to Settings → General and set Integration With System Music Controls to "Visual Only".
The app icon is missing from the menu bar
macOS hides menu bar icons when there isn't enough space.
Fix
- Open Settings → Menu Bar Icon
- Enable Allow Icon Below Menu Bar; this creates a floating icon that's always visible when you hover over the menu bar
You can also try a smaller icon style in the same settings.
I have a migration code but can't find where to enter it
The code input field is hidden by default; it only appears after a server check on startup. Firewalls, VPNs, or strict network settings can prevent this check from completing.
To reveal the migration code input field
- Open Settings → License and scroll to the bottom
- If you don't see the migration code input field, click the "Free Trial Active" or "Trial Ended" text 5 times to reveal the input field
- Enter your migration code; your license activates immediately
If the field still doesn't appear or the code is rejected, contact support.
The app can't find any of my Sonos speakers
This is almost always a local network permissions issue.
Fix
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network
- Find Menu Bar Controller for Sonos and enable the toggle
- Quit and relaunch the app
Also check
- Are you signed in with the same Sonos account used in the official Sonos app?
- Is Guest Mode enabled in settings? Try disabling it
The app says I'm in Guest Mode, but I purchased the full version
Guest Mode was likely enabled accidentally.
Fix
- Open Settings → Sonos System
- Disable the Guest Mode toggle
Features & Usage
How can I access my Spotify/Apple Music/Amazon Music/YouTube Music playlists?
Open the Music Library window (⌘⇧L by default) to browse your Sonos Favorites and Sonos Playlists, and to search across every streaming service connected to your Sonos system: songs, albums, artists, playlists, stations, and podcasts. Anything you save as a Sonos Favorite in the official Sonos app appears in MBC as well.
How do I control the volume of an individual speaker in a group?
Find the Volume element and click the expand icon in the top-right corner. Individual sliders for each speaker will appear below.
How do I group speakers quickly?
Hold the ⌘ (Command) key and click on any speaker you want to add to the current group. It joins immediately, no confirmation needed.
Can I select specific songs in a playlist?
Yes, since version 7. Search in the Music Library window finds individual songs on your streaming services and plays them right away with Play Now, Next, or Later. And once a playlist is playing, open the Queue and click any track to jump to it. The one remaining limit comes from Sonos: third-party apps still can't list the tracks inside a streaming playlist before playing it.
Are Intercom messages secure?
Yes. After recording, your Intercom message is securely uploaded to a server using a random, private link. Your Sonos speaker downloads the message, and it is then permanently deleted. The messages are short-lived, password-protected, and accessible only to you.
Setup & Installation
I have both S1 and S2 speakers. Can I use both?
Yes! The app supports both S1 and S2 speakers. Each appears as a separate Sonos system (household). Make sure all speakers are linked to the same Sonos account, then switch between systems in Settings → Sonos System.
How do I transfer my license from the old app?
If you purchased Menu Bar Controller before August 2025, you can unlock the new version for free.
Steps
- Open (or reinstall) Menu Bar Controller Lite from the App Store
- It will help you create a migration code
- In the new app, click Settings → License and scroll to the bottom to reveal the code input
- Enter your migration code
Each Mac needs its own migration code. Return to the old app to generate a new one for each device.
Can I install the app on multiple Macs?
Yes. App Store purchases are tied to your Apple Account and can be installed on all your Macs at no extra cost. Sign in to the App Store with the same Apple Account on each Mac and download the app.
Note: Users that migrated from the "Menu Bar Controller Lite" app need a separate migration code for each Mac.
I only see the wrong household. How do I find the right one?
Make sure all your Sonos systems are linked to the same account. You can transfer systems between accounts in the official Sonos app settings. If you don't see the household you want, check that you're logged in with the correct email address (visible in the official Sonos app settings).
Technical Issues
The song title and album art are stuck and won't update
This almost always means a different speaker group is selected in the app than the one that's actually playing. Click on the group that's currently playing and the info will update. If that doesn't help, quit and relaunch the app.
My speakers disappeared after a Sonos update
Sonos updates can sometimes cause speakers to disconnect from the Sonos cloud. Try unplugging one speaker from power, waiting 20 seconds, then plugging it back in. This usually reconnects them to the Sonos cloud. If this doesn't work, try unplugging a different speaker.
The settings screen only shows "General" and other tabs don't work
This is a known UI bug affecting macOS 13 (Ventura). When you click on other settings tabs, they jump back to General.
Unfortunately, we don't have a solution for this bug yet.
Purchase & Billing
Does the Menu Bar Controller cost money? What's the pricing?
The Menu Bar Controller offers a 14-day free trial, after which it costs $12.99 as a one-time purchase (not a subscription) to unlock the app forever.
Can I share the Menu Bar Controller with my family?
Yes, the Menu Bar Controller offers a Family plan that supports Apple's Family Sharing.
Family members with their own Mac just need to install the Menu Bar Controller on their Mac, and the purchase will automatically sync via Family Sharing.
